01 · Welcome

Happy Halloween week from all of us

Happy Halloween! from the Babson College GSC, on Babson green with two jack-o’-lanterns.

Hi everyone. Halloween falls on Saturday this year, which makes this the spookiest week of the semester, and all of us on the GSC hope you get to enjoy the festive week. Whether you have had a costume planned since September or are deciding on Friday night, and whether you are with us in Wellesley, at Babson Boston, in Miami, or studying online alongside a full-time job, we hope you find a moment this week to step away from the casework and celebrate the season with the people around you.

There are plenty of ways to mark the week on the calendar. On Thursday night, the Latin American Club takes over Empire in Seaport for a Halloween Party, with prizes for the best costumes, earlier that evening the Office of Belonging and Inclusion hosts LGBTQ+ Trivia Night, and in the afternoon our own GSC Weekly Coffee Social goes Halloween, with a Boo Latte special in the Graduate Student Lounge and Olin Cafe. The Latin American Club is also building an altar for its Día de Muertos celebration on Monday, November 2, and you can share a photo of someone you are remembering by noon on Friday so that it can be printed and placed on the altar.

If midterms left you running on empty, Grad Chill is a gentle way to come back to life. Tomorrow, the Office of Graduate Student Life and Leadership fills Knight Auditorium with interactive wellness activities, campus partners, free food, and raffle prizes, and it is open to every graduate student.

Thank you to everyone who joined the GSC and BFAT for apple picking at Shelburne Farm on Saturday, and a warm welcome to the partners and families who came along with our Partners Club. It was the Partners Club’s first event of the year, and we are so glad you were there.

Everything else happening this week is just below. If you have any questions, reply to this email to reach our team directly!

— Ryan Lee MBA’27, GSC President, on behalf of the GSC Executive Board

From the Grad CCD · Miami Connect 2027

Grad CCD Miami Connect 2027 takes place January 13 to 15, 2027, in Miami. It is a career exploration experience where you can meet Babson alumni and professionals across a variety of industries, and hear about the companies they work at, industry trends, their own career paths, and how some of them started their own companies.

It is a learning and networking experience rather than a recruiting or hiring event, and students arrange and cover the cost of their own flights, accommodations, and transportation to and from company treks. Space is limited and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so if building a career in Miami is on your mind, we would encourage you to sign up early.

Registration closes Sunday, December 13 at 11:00 PM ET.

08 · One more thing

A little Boston history for Halloween week. A Boston library holds an 1837 book whose cover, scientific testing has confirmed, is made of human skin. Which library is it?

The Boston Athenæum

Boston · 1837

The book is the Narrative of the Life of James Allen, the confession of a highwayman who died in prison in 1837. The story goes that Allen asked for a copy to be bound in his own skin and given to John Fenno, a man he had once tried and failed to rob, though the account rests on letters written nearly a century later. What is not in doubt is the binding itself, which peptide testing has confirmed, and that makes it a fitting piece of Boston history for Halloween week.

Two hands holding up a small book with a pale tan binding above a grey patterned slipcase: the 1837 Narrative of the Life of James Allen at the Boston Athenæum.
