01 · Welcome

A week to plan your next step, with Daniel Queiroz

Hi everyone. This week is all about your career, so we have asked Daniel Queiroz MBA’27, our VP of CCD Relations, to help us introduce it. Daniel is the GSC’s bridge to the Graduate Center for Career Development, and he meets with the Grad CCD team every month to carry your questions and feedback to them and to bring their resources back to you. In his own words, his goal this year is to “connect Babson talent with top recruiters and open more doors for our Babson grad community.”

The one event we most want you at this week is Thursday’s Make Your Mark Celebration, where two $5,000 scholarships are set aside for graduate students. From 4:30 to 6:00 PM in Babson Commons, the Babson Alumni Advisory Board will award four $5,000 scholarships, two of them to grad students in any degree track. To enter, you write a short response to a prompt that is only revealed in the room between 4:30 and 5:10 PM, and you need to stay until the winners are announced. It happens during Make Your Mark, Babson’s annual days of giving on October 14 and 15, and the full details are just below.

Graduate students and employer representatives talking at tables in a crowded hall during a Babson career fair, with large BABSON letters on the stage.

Two events this week you should know about. Tonight, the PE/VC Club and the Cutler Center welcome Brett Gordon MBA’98 and Scott Voss MBA’99 of HarbourVest Partners to Winn Auditorium for the HarbourVest Economic Forum, with opening remarks from President Spinelli, and Daniel and Roshni Galani have been working with the HarbourVest team to shape the conversation. On Thursday, the Graduate Fall Career Fair brings hiring managers and recruiters from multiple industries to Knight Auditorium from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, and pre-registration is required, so please sign up today.

Whether you are recruiting for a full-time role or an internship, thinking about a career switch, or starting to build relationships, both events are open to graduate students in every program, and we would love to see you there. Everything else happening this week is just below. If you have any questions, reply to this email to reach our team directly!

Two $5,000 scholarships for grad students

Thursday, October 15 · Enter in person 4:30 to 5:10 PM · Babson Commons

Make Your Mark Scholarships: Write In Person for $5,000

4:30 to 6:00 PM · Babson Commons · Open to graduate students in every degree track · No sign-up needed

At Thursday’s Make Your Mark Celebration, the Babson Alumni Advisory Board will award four $5,000 scholarships, and two of them are for graduate students. Eligibility is based on current and continued enrollment and good standing at the College, regardless of degree track, so every graduate program counts. The scholarship is applied by the College to the future cost of your attendance at Babson.

How to enter: come to Babson Commons and write a response to a prompt that is only revealed at the event. Entries are collected in person between 4:30 and 5:10 PM, winners are selected on their responses, and you must be in the room when your name is called after entries close, so plan to stay for the announcement.

Plan your Thursday afternoon. The Graduate Fall Career Fair runs from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in Knight Auditorium, and scholarship entries close at 5:10 PM, so leave time to get from the fair to Babson Commons and write your response. The prompt is not available in advance or remotely.

Why it is happening: October 14 and 15 are Make Your Mark, Babson’s annual days of giving, with a goal of 3,000 donors to unlock additional scholarship funding, support for student clubs and organizations, and key campus initiatives. Because the goal counts donors rather than dollars, every gift moves it forward, so please make your gift. For club leaders: the three SGA or GSC recognized clubs or organizations with the most donors to their fund on the leaderboard at midnight ET on October 15 win $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000.

HarbourVest Economic Forum: A Fireside Chat with Brett Gordon MBA’98 and Scott Voss MBA’99

5:00 to 8:00 PM · Winn Auditorium · Opening remarks by President Spinelli · Reception to follow

Two Babson MBAs from HarbourVest Partners come back to campus tonight for a conversation about where the economy is heading and how private equity is responding. Brett Gordon MBA’98 is HarbourVest’s Chief Operating Officer and serves on the Babson College Board of Trustees, and Scott Voss MBA’99 is a Managing Director and Senior Market Strategist at the firm.

On the agenda: the macroeconomic picture and how private markets firms are navigating a higher-rate environment, the energy transition, and the wave of capital moving into artificial intelligence, along with a candid look at how a global private markets platform decides where capital goes and how it underwrites risk.

How the evening runs. President Stephen Spinelli opens the program and introduces both speakers, a moderated fireside chat and audience Q&A follow, and the evening closes with a networking reception with the speakers and the HarbourVest team, with food and drinks. The forum is open to graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and alumni.

It is a good fit whether you are recruiting for private markets or simply want a clearer picture of the forces shaping the economy this year. Please register so the team can plan the reception.

Saturday, October 17 · GSC Social Series with BFAT

GSC Social Series: Apple Picking at Shelburne Farm, from the Babson Food Club and the Babson College GSC. Join the GSC and the Babson Food and Agriculture Technology Club for a Saturday in the orchard. Pick Honeycrisp and Macoun, grab a warm cider donut, and meet grad students from every program. Partners welcome! Saturday, Oct 17, 2026, 11:00am to 2:00pm. Shelburne Farm, 106 West Acton Road, Stow, MA 01775. Carpools leave from campus at 10:15am. Register now on Engage. Apple Picking at Shelburne Farm

11:00 AM to 2:00 PM · Shelburne Farm, 106 West Acton Road, Stow · Carpools leave campus at 10:15 AM

The GSC and the Babson Food and Agriculture Technology Club (BFAT) are heading to Shelburne Farm in Stow, a family orchard about 40 minutes from campus, for a Saturday of apple picking, hot cider donuts, and a few hours away from your laptop. This week the farm is picking Honeycrisp, Macoun, Gala, McIntosh, Cortland, and Pink Lady, and there are pumpkins in the patch, hayrides through the orchard, and food trucks on weekends.

Partners and families are welcome, so bring the people who keep you going during module crunch. The day is open to graduate students in every program, and it is part of the GSC Social Series.

How it works. Meet us at the farm at 11:00 AM, or join a carpool from campus at 10:15 AM, and tell us on the RSVP whether you can drive or need a seat. We will split into picking groups at the entrance and share bags: a one-peck bag (about 10 lbs) is $32 for up to three people, and a half-bushel bag (about 20 lbs) is $46 for up to five, which works out to about $10 a person. Hayrides are $3 extra.

The farm takes card and Apple Pay only, with no cash and no pets, and the day runs rain or shine, so wear shoes that can handle a muddy orchard row.

A little Boston history. With Friday’s Pins & Pride happening at Lucky Strike Fenway, here is a question about the ballpark down the street. Fenway Park opened in April 1912, only days after one of the most famous disasters at sea, which crowded its opening day out of the headlines. Which disaster was it?

The Titanic

April 15, 1912

The sinking of the Titanic. The ship went down on April 15, 1912, and Fenway Park opened five days later, on April 20. More than a century on, Fenway is the oldest ballpark still in use in Major League Baseball.

Aerial photo of Fenway Park. Fenway Park opened just days after the Titanic sank. Fenway hosted its first official game on April 20, 1912, making it the oldest active ballpark in Major League Baseball. The Red Sox won that first game 7–6 in 11 innings.
